Cleopatra (Sedir) Island
Cleopatra Island, located in the Gulf of Gokova, has a unique beach with golden sand and Roman ruins. It is a very special place. It is said that the soft white sand was brought all the way from the Red Sea shores of Egypt especially for Cleopatra. The beach is heavily protected by the government to keep it and the ruins safe from any damage. A short boat trip by wooden fishing boat takes you to this dreamy island where you can discover paradise and swim in the crystal-clear turquoise water.
Sedir Island, in the Gulf of Gökova, is the ancient site of Cedrai. The remains of buildings surrounded by old city walls on the east of Sedir Island date back to the Roman and Hellenistic period, and the small amphitheatre is in excellent condition. The Christian Basilica was constructed over the pedestals of the Apollo Temple, dedicated to Dors. There is an Agora on the west of Sedir with inscriptions suggesting that athletics festivals devoted to Apollo were organised in the region.
What is known as the City Islands comprise Sedir Island, Orta Island and Kücük Island. There are Necropolis ruins at Kücük Island, as well as relief-embossed columns.
Drive from Marmaris to Gelibolu Bay and take a boat across to see the panoramic views of the mountains. Gökova village nestles in the bay with its houses at the base of the mountains.
