Turkish Treasure

E-mail Print PDF
Everywhere in the antique cities one can find “souvenirs” in the form of potsherds, decorated marble and glass bits etc. And if you stir in the ground more will appear. There are naturally most possibilities where there are few tourists and where the archaeologists have not yet been. There are also broken columns, capitals* and sarchophagi* that would look nice in any garden.

Through the years museums and private persons have taken their share of the Turkish heritage, which explains the very strict law concerning national treasures. It is strictly forbidden to destroy or remove antique items, whether they are on the ground or in it or at the bottom of the sea.  The penalty is from two to five years imprisonment and fines from 5,000 to 10,000 Lire. It is double if you try to take it out of the country. Nobody would probably raise an eyebrow if you took a potsherd, but where the line is drawn is unknown.
