Banks of Turkey

E-mail Print PDF
The variety of bank outlets is due to the high number of private and public Turkish banks, most of whom have branches in the larger towns. Mainly, their services are comparable to European banks. There is the opportunity to use online-banking as well as most of the well-known credit card systems. There is, however, still one big problem: the size of most of the branches does not lend itself to the number of customers in tourist centres, which means it may take some time to be served. Even the system of taking a number for service does not mean that your duty will be transacted any quicker.

Despite this problem, the service is usually very good and helpful if you need to open an account in Turkey. Service is seen as very important here. You can choose from a huge variety of accounts depending on your requirements, whether it be in Turkish currency or a Euro, or even US dollar account. It is all possible here. The interest on money being put into an account over here for a couple of month can be quite interesting as well.

For tourists and residents the best way to pay for things is to use a credit or debit card. If you need to pay for a telephone, electricity or restaurant bill, nearly everywhere credit cards are accepted. In Turkey it is not so common to work on a credit line in the account, because expenses are very high.

If you need to carry out any transactions with anywhere in Europe, this is easy as well. Sometimes it actually works much better than elsewhere in Europe. What is quite important is to use the swift code of the local bank. This is a kind of international bank code. If you need to transfer money over here and you use the Swift code it will get into your account within two days.

Some Turkish banks have branches in Europe as well. Please use all the services available, especially when doing business, but, remember, there are big differences in services and fees, just like in Europe.
