Even though some people say Turkey is, in matters of technology, not a very modern state, this is not true for computer-systems and all related equipment. All the high tech units from motherboards to quick memory savers or graphic controllers are available, if not in the local computer shop, in the bigger towns. Sometimes, prices are really surprising. It is as cheap here as it is in the big specialized computer shops in Europe.
Like everywhere in the world, you can find pre-prepared computer systems in the big shopping centres or superstores as well. Even though there are low prices, there are also some disadvantages. Whenever there is a problem and you need service quickly, you may find out there is no service at the place of purchase, which means the computer must be taken away. This can mean weeks of waiting. A much better solution is to talk to a firm specialising in building up computer systems to ensure you get the service you need. This might be a little more expensive, but, at least, you will get better, widely used components.
Lots of new settlers from foreign countries over here do not only use the computer for word processing, they need to have an internet connection, used for surfing or for telephoning. During the last few years, especially in the tourist areas, lots of people have managed to get a quick internet connection. Turkish Telecom has offered new systems called ADSL for this purpose. With ADSL it became possible to use the internet for telephone calls as well. If you are ever offered ADSL, you should try to take it quickly, because there are only a few ports available at any one time.
Like in Europe there is a flat rate on offer. The prices are shown in the local PTT. Please remember when ordering ADSL, to use the internet for telephone calls, it is necessary to have at least 512 kb. After connecting with the internet, it is not only the telephone you can use. All the modern internet traffic is there, whether it is just surfing or maybe internet banking. Everything is possible.
