İstanbul - Spice Bazaar

At the bottom of the new Galata Bridge you will find countless fishermen queued up in a line along the quay. They are the biggest group of people there, together with the fishermen in their boats, and are preparing sandwiches containing fried fish. All around the bridge people are trying to sell their goods with lots of shouting and waving of arms - from a powder which changes copper to gold to small wheels used for cutting glass. Travelling tradesmen, small boys who cannot see over the heaps of sandwiches they are selling (loudly!), the shoe-repair men and the ones selling or just carrying water; all these people together make the scene pleasant and colourful.

On the way to the spice bazaar there is the mosque of Beyazits, always surrounded by the local pigeons together with people selling all kinds of seeds. Right behind, on the flower market, in the middle between rows of roses and petunia, there are animals of all types offered for sale: small dogs, rabbits and birds. All around you there are ever-changing smells coming from the huge sacks of different coloured spices for sale.
