Next to football basket ball is the most famous and well-known sport in Turkey with lots of clubs and fans. Who does not know names like: Fenerbahce, Besiktas or Galatasaray?
These names are well known already because of football. On closer investigation you will see that's because of basketball as well.Even in international terms, Turkish Basket Ball is on an equal level to other European Teams, whether we are talking about club teams or the national team. In any championship, Turkish teams are always near the top. There is always one Turkish team in the Euro League.
Basket Ball is also played by lots of women. Turkish womens teams can be compared favourably to European teams. Please forget the well known and often mentioned prejudices about the role of women in Turkey. There is emancipation in sport and also in all major cities, maybe more than in Europe. If you get the chance to learn about Atatürk, the Founder of Turkey, you will quickly realise why.

Basketball World Championship in Turkey
The male Basket ball Worldchampionship 2010 will happen in Turkey starting with 28th of August until 12th of September. The competition will be managed by FIBA (Worldbasketballclub), by the Turkish Basketball Federation and the Comite for Organisation in 2010.For the first time since 1986 there will be competition between 24 national teams. All matches during the group-phase will happen in 4 different towns while the finals will be in Istanbul.
