Only slowly and gradually is surfing becoming more well- known in Turkey as a new sport. The main reason for that is that there are just a few areas with good surfing conditions.
Only a few places have the daily windy or even stormy weather conditions the surfers would prefer.
There are a few spots in Turkey. The most well-known one is at Cesme.
Because of the special conditions between the water and the mountains, there will always be a wind. For people who want to learn this sport slowly and gradually, there are really wonderful places to glide over the water. There are no waves, nothing to disturb you while keeping afloat. This helps you to get the right feeling of how to handle the board and sail. Once you start moving you will quickly leave the shore, pass the wonderful mountain range and enjoy the view into the Taurus Mountains. A special feeling, especially when there is snow on the mountain tops.
After a little bit of practice you will be able to see the shoals of fish in the clear blue water, and if you are really lucky, you may see some dolphins as well. They sometimes follow you, jumping and playing.
At some places along the coast there is the chance to see sunken villages lying below the water, looking so close that they could almost be touched. However, you should not touch anything or dive into the water to look for relics, because to do so would get you arrested. There are very strict laws about picking up relics from anywhere.
Unfortunately, there are no places in Turkey challenging enough for professional surfers. However, all other surfers will enjoy the experience, the wonderful warm deep blue water and the sunshine.
