The Red Tower of Alanya

In 1226, Sultan Alaadin Keykubat conquered Alanya after a battle lasting about 5 years. He then quickly set about building the Red Tower to protect the town’s dockyard. The castle of Alanya and the Red Tower are the most visited places in Alanya and are the most important sights in the town. The Red Tower was to be seen on the old 250000 TL banknote, which is no longer used after the introduction of the new Turkish Lira (TL).

The Red Tower was finished in 1226, is 33 metres high with five floors and is of octagonal construction.
Today the first floor is used for exhibitions of old tools, weapons and lots of other things still depicting the power of the Osman rulers.

Long vertical slits in the walls of the tower give character to the building but they were actually necessary for defence when shooting at the enemy without being hit themselves. This gave the soldiers the ability to strike at their enemy without them being able to strike back. When the enemy came too close, a method of defence was to pour hot water and other liquids onto their heads.

The tower is open to visitors from 10.00 until 5.00
