The biblical town of Antioch
The historical and biblical town of Antioch in the Asi Mountains (Orontes) is situated on a huge fertile plain surrounded by high mountains. Antioch was once famous for its opulent and luxurious life style as the major city of the Seleukiden people. The prominent cultural and commercial position of the town was also well known during the Roman period.
Quite famous as an important place for the Christian religion, Antioch is still visited by lots of people. In ancient times, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas were active, and it was here that the followers of Jesus were called Christians for the first time.
The picture below shows a mosaic from the archaeological museum, which houses the largest collection of mosaics in the world.
