Hasim Yetkin (Hasim Hoca)
Alanya – From Past to Present
One person who has always supported his hometown using all his knowledge and energy is Hasim Yetkin. Apart from the city guide “Alanya,” he has written many more books which try to capture the reader’s imagination with scenes and topics, hints and tips about Alanya. Another book is about typical Turkish recipes. At the end of this page you will find a bibliography of all his publications.
I was born in the county of Büyük Hasbahce. I went to school in Alanya and after finishing my studies to become a teacher I went to the village of Ücyol, near to Ordu. After five years of teaching there I came back to my beloved Alanya. During the next years I worked as a teacher in the village of Akdam until I was moved to the primary school at Hayate Hanim where I had already been a student.
I worked first as an ordinary teacher, and later became headmaster of this school until I took voluntary retirement. During those 27 years of work as a teacher, I studied the Ataturk course for new regulations in society and I have got several awards for my work. My interest in photography can be traced back to my former teacher of physics, who showed me lots of the techniques. Even so, over the years we have had some problems with each other relating to photography. But that's life. I will always thank him for having taught me.
Whenever I had an exhibition about my Alanya, whether in Ankara or at the fairs in Izmir, my teacher got the first invitation. The most important exhibition for me was when I got the invitation to meet our President Kenan Evren at the time of his meeting with Cavucesku, the President of Rumania.
Due to a resolution by our town mayor, Mr. Müstakbel Dim, I have got a medal of honour combined with an award of 500.000.00 TL for my work in making Alanya well-known all over the world. This was a very special moment in my life because it happened on 24th of November 1987, the national holiday for all Turkish teachers. He gave a talk in front of all my colleagues, relating the important details of my life, saying: `For years, teacher Hasim Yetkin has put much effort into making Alanya well-known and we all need to thank him very much and wish him success in his future work`.
I am also really proud of my three sons. All of them have studied successfully. Last, but not least, I am proud of all the students who are now working in different positions to help this wonderful town develop.
