Biking to the Lower Rems Valley and to Waiblingen

The lower Rems Valley between Waiblingen and the mouth of the Rems into the Neckar next Remseck was our present destination, because Lower Rems Valley is one of the very few natural river sections that still exist in the region.

The intricate Rems wetlands and the "Schwarze Rems" - a river's side stream along the Rems river - form the landscape that we wanted to explore by bicycle.

The last meters before the meeting of the rivers, Rems river flows along the promenade "Am Remsufer" in the district Neckarrems by passing several Rems bridges, an intermediate destination of our tour to the Lower Remstal.

Bridges over the Rems, or the Neckar as an intermediate destination, you dear reader may wonder? Yes, because there is something extraordinary with the bridges and not just interesting for architects and engineers:

Two free-floating wooden bridges span the Neckar River and the Rems, which were the largest timber bridges in Europe at the time of their construction.

The pedestrian bridges crossing the Neckar (80 m length) and the Rems (51.2 m long) were built in 1988 and 1990, still represent an architectural and professional woodworking achievement.

They are entirely made of wood in the basic framework and are protected against the weather by a roof of overlapping glass panels.

The 180-ton-heavy timber construction was assembled along the bank of the river Rems and then pushed across the rivers.

A large pontoon, several car cranes, countless construction workers, the voluntary fire brigade and the water protection police were in operation.
