Wieland Payer - We cordially invite you and your friends to the opening with the artist on Saturday, September 27th at 8 p.m.!

Our present is full of wonders and challenges. Artificial intelligence, streams of migrants, barbaric ideologies and religions, murderous wars, ruthless politicians and business magnates – little has changed since the days of pirates.

Wieland Payer - September 27th to November 22nd, 2025 | Galerie Rothamel Erfurt

Payer's "Quest" series transports us back to the world of buccaneers and buccaneers and interweaves it with the present. He presents stormy seas, giant crystals, Flying Dutchmen – and the timeless beauty of nature.

Payer's landscapes and still lifes are largely devoid of people and overlaid with enigmatic apparitions. Do they originate from fiction, descriptions by Humboldtian explorers, or simply artistic imagination? Wieland Payer weaves representational, abstract, and metaphysical elements into something new. His ideal images create visions of another world.

Wieland Payer works with pastel paintings and presents them in a new light. He achieves this through their unusual application to large formats, a brilliant mastery and careful development of technique, through drawing virtuosity, and a special feeling for fascinating themes.

Wieland Payer (*1981) studied at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle (diploma, 2009), the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (Erasmus scholarship), and the Royal College of Art in London (scholarship from the Studienstiftung and the DAAD, Master's degree, 2011). The young artist's works are included in renowned public collections.

Wieland Payer uses graphic techniques, primarily pastel, to create landscapes. He finds his subjects on the move, while traveling and hiking. In his depiction of nature, he draws inspiration from German Romantic artists such as Carl Blechen and Caspar David Friedrich. However, Payer's works are also permeated by geometric forms, which, on the one hand, recall the achievements of modern technology such as telephone lines, but which are also incorporated into the composition as abstract surfaces.
