Pielenhofen - Friendly and always helpful support was our first and ongoing experience during our project stay at the Pielenhofen campsite on the Naab River.

The campsite has been run by the Bach family for several generations and is continuously being expanded without losing its family-run character.

It had initially started rather unpleasantly, as recreational visitors from nearby Regensburg had caused some displeasure among the residents of Pielenhofen living along the Naab River.

Predominantly engaged in agriculture, the Regensburg residents, eager to swim, were often responsible for damage to the fields, ultimately rendering entire areas unusable for farming.

Campsite founders Ludwig and Anna Bach turned their initial frustration into an opportunity, resulting in one of the most scenic campsites in Eastern Bavaria:

The site is located directly on the Naab River, surrounded by meadows and forests, and offers a wide range of activities for water sports and outdoor enthusiasts. We ourselves have already compiled and published some of our experiences in reports and blog posts (see links at the end of the text).

The Pielenhofen campsite developed from the ancient Distelhausen farmstead near Pielenhofen. The farmstead was first documented in 1325.

For approximately 300 years, the Bach family has demonstrably guided the history of this farmstead, and family members are still active in agriculture today.

With the influx of recreation-seeking residents of Regensburg, as described above, the idea for establishing a tourist business was born. The foundation stone for the now much-expanded campsite was laid in 1959.

In addition to the aforementioned leisure activities for all ages and the pitches for permanent and day campers, the Naabtal-Pielenhofen campsite now offers several holiday homes, ranging in size from 30 to 40 square meters, each with a veranda or patio and two small bedrooms accommodating 2 to 3 people.

The restaurant, styled like a Bavarian beer garden, has become a popular spot not only for campsite guests but also for cyclists and canoeists traveling along or on the Naab River. We ourselves have had the pleasure of experiencing the excellent cuisine on several occasions.

Of course, the surrounding area, with the ancient Roman and cathedral city of Regensburg, the Walhalla memorial, the Liberation Hall, the Danube and Naab rivers, the Danube Gorge, the caves, and the castles, also contributes to the growing popularity of sustainable tourism in the region.

The location of the Pielenhofen campsite, so close to the popular holiday motorway A, initially gave us the impression that Pielenhofen was "only" a transit campsite for summer holidaymakers heading south. However, our conversations with fellow campers quickly revealed that many guests had initially followed precisely this plan, but then, thanks to the many other options available, ended up staying a few days in Pielenhofen. The campsite and its surroundings are definitely worth a visit.
