The district of Friesland is located in the traditional settlement area of the Frisians in East Friesland, the peninsula between the Ems and the Jadebusen (like the neighboring city of Wilhelmshaven), but politically never belonged to East Frisia.
After the downfall of the reign of Jever, the Jeverland, as previously the Frisian Wehde, getting part of Oldenburg and is still counted to Oldenburg country. The district includes the East Frisian island Wangerooge and the east of it located Minsener Oog.
