Since the inauguration as "the first German naval port at the Jade" on June 17, 1869, the history of Wilhelmshaven has been closely linked to the creation and development of the German navy. Today, the city is the largest location in the navy. Since the implementation of the new Bundeswehr stationing concept in 2011, Wilhelmshaven is by far the largest location of the Bundeswehr. Wilhelmshaven has the deep water port with the largest water depth in Germany and is the largest crude oil transshipment port in the country. 72% of the crude oil turnover of all German seaports and almost 27% of the German crude oil import are handled via Wilhelmshaven.
