Rusinowo – Few days of relaxation on Baltic Sea beach

Rusinowo is a small holiday village near the Baltic Sea coast that actually ended up in our portfolio of places worth visiting by chance, as we were only looking for a holiday accommodation for a few days of relaxation.

The town Rusinowo is quite small and manageable, stretching along a single road to the beach, where a crossroads separates the sandy beach from the road in front of the green belt protected by pine and spruce trees. Nevertheless, Rusinowo is particularly suitable for tourists’ seeking peace and relaxation on the beach, in the Baltic Sea, and in nature, away from the hustle and bustle, in stark contrast to the town of Jarosławiec, just a few kilometres away, but more on that later.

Travel via Berlin and Szczecin to Koszalin and Rusinowo

In addition to family visits, this time the focus of our trip, which initially took us via Berlin and Szczecin to Poland, was a visit to the beach, which was also immediately connected to the realization of the complex consequences, with hardly any desired results but immensely high costs, of the current border controls. And what a fuss, once again directed solely against the population, driven by the idea of using them to get the migration problem under control. Has anyone ever calculated the economic costs of 20 kilometres of traffic jam? It's clear that the desired effect will certainly not be achieved in relation to the costs. What madness! Not to mention the painstakingly built trust that is being carelessly squandered. It's unbelievable what misconceptions some politicians are pursuing.

After the horror at the border crossing, we continued on a well-maintained road via Koszalin to the exit for Rusinowo. Since the connecting access road was currently being built, the descent was a bit of an adventure. From there, however, the journey continued continuously along narrow country roads to Rusinowo. Naturally, our first stop took us directly to the beach, and we were thrilled.

Rusinowo Beach on the Baltic Sea – endless sandy beaches

The region around Rusinow is slightly hilly, so the town lies between 1.1 and 28.3 meters above sea level and borders the Baltic Sea to the north with dune forest and two kilometres of beach.

The formerly German town of Rützenhagen, a settlement of farms, was founded around 1300, and the number of farms remained unchanged for centuries: 1 mayor, 19 farmers, and 3 cottagers. The Rützenhagen farmers also participated in maritime trade, fishing, and "strand rights." Flax was also grown and woven into linen. The town supplied sailcloth to Rügenwalde and shirt cloth to Stolp and Stettin.

Today, there are numerous new buildings in Rusinowo, mostly used as vacation homes, with shopping limited to daily necessities and small souvenirs. For Western-style shopping, you should head to Koszalin or Darłowo, where the selection is significantly larger.

It's safe to say that Rusinowo is now more of a vacation spot, quiet and family-friendly, with only a few restaurants serving marine and freshwater fish as a staple of the regional cuisine due to its proximity to the open sea and the surrounding inland waterways.

Nightlife is virtually non-existent, as the options for going out in town are limited. Night owls will head to Koszalin, Darłowo, or one of the neighbouring larger cities.

Since the Baltic coast is generally shallow underwater and there are hardly any tides or unpredictable currents, swimming on the beautiful sandy beach is relatively safe. Swimming is therefore safe even for families with children, especially since there are numerous supervised beach areas along the coast, including directly in front of Rusinowo. Swimming accidents are therefore rare, and those who follow the general swimming rules and avoid entering the water during high waves have little to fear. This is easily recognizable by the red flags that are hoisted at the sea rescue posts.

We really enjoyed swimming, despite the sometimes-high waves (perhaps because of them). The pebbled stretches are striking, constantly changing with the waves, and it's immediately clear that numerous beachgoers follow this movement in search of amber. We often followed the amber collectors who searched for the gemstones along the surf.

Life is bustling in Jarosławiec – not our cup of tea

Sure, we also took a long walk along the beach all the way to Jarosławiec, but to be clear, that's not our world: bustling life, gambling halls, and textiles that were cheap and easy to buy. Here, too, the sandy beach is clearly the main attraction.

Early in the morning, some fishermen bring their boats onto the beach and sell their catch straight from the boats. So, if you like fresh fish, you'll have to get up early. If you're interested, you can also ask the fishermen to take you on a trip out to sea.

An interesting attraction in the town is the lighthouse, built in 1829 and approximately 33 meters high. It was rebuilt in 1902. The observation deck can be accessed for a fee, although it can get crowded on weekends and during school holidays. From here, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the town, the coast with the coastal lakes of Lake Vitter, Lake Jarmund, and Lake Vietz, and, of course, the sea. All of these lakes also offer swimming opportunities for those who find the sea too rough.

Also of interest is the Amber Museum (Muzeum Bursztynu w Jarosławcu), Nadmorska 1, which opened in 2014 and documents the history of Baltic amber. Also on display are numerous pieces of amber with enclosed animals and plants, as well as a reconstructed tropical amber forest. The museum houses one of the largest pieces of amber in the world, as well as a rare piece of blue amber.

For us, as day visitors to the place, there was another special feature that we would like to recommend to other tourist destinations: an inexpensive, high-quality restaurant with numerous main course options, always with a soup starter and dessert, right next to the pedestrian walkway. Great.

A pleasant experience to complement three wonderful days on the beautiful sandy beach in Rusinowo.
