Princes’ Islands of Marmara Sea by sailing boat
- Written by Portal Editor
Princes’ Islands - The other pleasant part of Istanbul is Adalar Islands strewn over the Marmara Sea. They are known as Princes’ Islands by foreigners because the rulers of the Byzantine Empire sent troublesome princes to these islands to rot away.
One can easily find a ferry to reach the islands, even in the winter. The islands are getting more and more crowded on the weekends during the summer season.

There are a few hotels as well, but if you want to spend a night on the island, make a reservation well in advance. What about swimming? There are small beaches and tiny bays along the coasts of the islands. Swimming is possible in the clean and cool water of the Marmara Sea.

What are the Princes' Islands?
The archipelago consists of nine islands, four of which are regularly visited: Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, and Kınalıada. They owe their name to Byzantine princes who were once exiled here. Today, they are a popular destination for those seeking relaxation, culture vultures, and nature lovers alike.
The four most popular islands at a glance
1. Büyükada (Big Island)
2. Heybeliada
Greener, quieter, and somewhat less touristy—Heybeliada boasts charm and cultural diversity. The former Greek Orthodox seminary, the historic naval academy, and shady hiking trails make this island particularly attractive for independent travelers.
3. Burgazada
4. Kınalıada
The closest island to the mainland is known primarily for its red cliffs and somewhat simpler infrastructure. Ideal for a short beach trip – and because there are fewer tourists here, you can experience the real everyday life of Istanbul's day-trippers.
Getting to the Princes' Islands
Tip: Arrive early in the day, especially on weekends, to avoid long waits for the ferries.
