Kato Gatzea on Pelion - fishing village between olive groves

Kato Gatzea is a small fishing village on the west side of the Pelion Peninsula, surrounded by immense large olive groves and surrounded by the foothills of the Pelion Mountains.

We wanted to spend a few days in the surroundings of Volos in order to explore the region there as part of our project work. Kato Gatzea is only about 3 kilometers north of the village of Kala Nera and to the regional capital Volos it is only about 15 kilometers. The village has a narrow but long beach area consisting of a combination of sand and small pebbles.

The beach in the village of Kato Gatzea itself is not overwhelming, but the predominantly camper tourists come here to enjoy the typical Greek atmosphere, the quietness and the beautiful surroundings. Along the shore boulevard of the village, with some trees and palm trees at the beginning and at the end of the promenade, you will find a number of fish restaurants and also some simple accommodation for the tourists who travel without their own tent or camper.

Between Kato Gatzea and Kala Nera, directly on a beautiful beach section, there are two campsites, one of which is open all year around. Here on the sandy beach, which is called Sikia beach, you will find shadows among the trees that reach the beach. The water at Sikia Beach is shallow, the sea is very quiet and thus also safe swimming for children and older guests is positive option. At the campsite there is a mini market and a tavern right on the beach. Nearby are other small bays surrounded by rocks, where you can go swimming too.

The center of the picturesque village of Kato Gatzea with its small shops, cafes and tavernas is very attractive, especially since it is always very quiet and relaxed. The lively village of Afyssos is 6 km away and to Volos it is only a 15-minute ride by public transport. The picturesque mountain village of Milies, which can also be reached with a narrow-gauge railway, is about 10 km away.

The nearest airport to Achialos is 40 km away, while there is even a Pelion ski resort that is 25 km away. Known for the region is also the Mithoni archaeological site, which we will explore during the next visit.
