It is assumed that the Slavic ancestors of the Slovenes moved to the territory of today's Slovenia in the 6th century and settled there. In the 7th century, the Slavic principality of Karantania was established.
In the course of the next two centuries, Karantania came under Bavarian, then under Franconian domination. In the middle of the tenth century, by the victory of the king and later Emperor Otto I in the Battle of the Lechfeld (near Augsburg) the road for the Eastern colonization of the Holy Roman Empire was free.
