Stop 19 – Camper Stop in Agkistro: Thermal Springs & Hiking
While searching for interesting locations that offer both great outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling and parking spaces for campers, we discovered the village of Agkistro, near the Bulgarian border.
It is already well-known among locals and tourists alike for its mineral-rich hot springs, which serve as a *hammam* (Turkish bath) and/or Roman-style bath.
Following discussions with local residents, a designated parking area for campers has been established. It is accessible year-round, and while full utility hookups (electricity and water) are currently being installed, basic access to power and water is already available. It is an ideal spot to pause your journey while enjoying a truly relaxing experience.
As an alternative to traveling through North Macedonia, those heading to Greece can also take a route from Niš (Serbia) via Sofia toward the Greek border. The camper stop is located in the village of Agkistro, just past the border crossing. The surrounding landscape is stunning, featuring vast forests and streams some of which are suitable for fishing along with numerous hiking opportunities. The local restaurants are also highly recommended; a standout specialty is their trout, raised on-site in fresh spring water.
For those seeking relaxation and therapeutic benefits, the hot and warm baths are a must especially during the shoulder seasons or in winter. The mineral-rich water is particularly recommended for individuals suffering from rheumatism or arthritis. The bath facilities in Agkistro are open year-round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their excellent accessibility is a major advantage, allowing visitors to enjoy the site throughout the entire weekend. The water temperature ranges between 35 and 39°C; it is hypotonic and slightly radioactive, making it suitable for the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis.
For those interested in cultural heritage, a unique event takes place every May near the village at the Roupel Bunker complex. In addition to the permanent bunker museum, a large number of participants and vehicles gather once a year to reenact combat and defensive scenes depicting the Greek forces defending against the advancing German Wehrmacht.
