Thessaloniki – A truly cosmopolitan city favoured by young people and students, Thessaloniki reveals its character right at the White Tower, where signposts point to diverse locations across the globe.
An excursion boat, decorated in a pirate theme, invites visitors to enjoy a nightly harbour cruise complete with a meal and cocktails a boat tour that is also popular with locals.
From any angle viewed from all sides the White Tower stands as the true landmark of Thessaloniki.
A masterpiece of nature that needs no description.
Not far away, there is a masterpiece from the modern era!
And another one! Modern art graffiti in various forms can be found on many walls and streets; sometimes permitted and tolerated, other times illegal.
The entrance to the Archaeological Museum is graced by a marble sarcophagus impressively adorned with ornamentation, clearly pointing to the Greco-Roman history of the Macedonia region.
Inside the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, we encountered, among other things, the bust of the Roman Emperor and conqueror Septimius Severus, created between 196 and 200 AD.
A number of churches representing various religious traditions have survived from Byzantine and later periods; visiting them all would easily take up a full day in Thessaloniki.
To this day, numerous church buildings such as Hagia Apostoloi, Hagia Ekaterini, the Vlatades Monastery, and others bear witness to the deep roots of religion among the population, both in the past and the present. Here we have the excavated though poorly maintained catacomb complex of Agios Ioannis...
A little later, we came across this beautifully restored church; unfortunately, due to our lack of Greek language skills, we cannot name it. Perhaps someone can help us out.
And at the end of today’s tour, the Church of Saint Demetrios (Agios Dimitrios, the patron saint of Thessaloniki).
