Lake Ohrid – Camping Activities and Evening Atmosphere
- Written by Portal Editor
Lake Ohrid – What all camping activities have in common is that one does not stay overnight in buildings, but rather spends time in the great outdoors whether at designated campsites that are as close to nature as possible, or even by camping "wild."
This fosters diverse international connections, leading to an exchange of ideas and, at times, even genuine friendships. This is especially true when people are able to share the atmosphere of the evening together. Here, taking the idyllic Rino campsite on Lake Ohrid as an example, such moments even inspired lyrical musings in the form of quotes:
carry me away – weary day
take me along – toward the morning
carry me away – weary day
hold me close – yet grant me peace
no word drifts in from the streets
evening hours – they carry us away
carry me away – weary day
in you, I have seen so much
one last look – at hours gone by
to which we shall never return
and then we fly with the clouds
on silver wings through the night
looking down at the earth, weightless
until it brings us back to reality

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world. It is the oldest known extant lake in Europe. Its age was previously estimated at between two and five million years; the presence of endemic species suggested an origin in the Pleistocene epoch or even earlier. However, analysis of drill cores from sediment layers up to 700 meters thick results of which were published in 2021 finally allowed its age to be determined with relative precision at 1.36 million years. The lake was formed by a rift valley. Tectonic activity, which continues to this day, is likely responsible for the existence of a submerged mountain rising approximately 100 meters from the lakebed.
