Leipzig Book Fair 2026 – We Were There Again!

Leipzig Book Fair – From March 19 to 22, 2026, the International Book Fair took place in Leipzig.

Once again even just during the drive there while searching for a parking spot it became clear just how significantly the surge in visitor numbers can impact the infrastructure of the exhibition grounds.

However, this year the fair did not bring unadulterated joy

leipzig 2026 03With approximately 3,000 events held at over 300 reading venues and featuring more than 3,000 participants, this year’s program at the Leipzig Book Fair once again provided a grand stage for publishers and authors. Literature enthusiasts were able to experience literature live through readings, panel discussions, and interactive events as part of the official fair program on the Leipzig exhibition grounds, as well as at numerous additional reading venues located throughout the city as part of the "Leipzig Reads" festival.

However, this year the fair did not bring unadulterated joy; the German Bookstore Prize became the focal point of an unusually heated debate. Wolfram Weimer, the Minister of State for Culture, removed three bookstores originally nominated by the jury from the list of award recipients. He cited "findings relevant to national security" as his justification, without elaborating further.

leipzig 2026 04This decision sparked fierce criticism within the bookselling trade, the cultural sector, and the media. Shortly thereafter, the Minister cancelled the awards ceremony which had been scheduled to take place during the Leipzig Book Fair entirely, stating that a "fitting tribute" was currently impossible given the heated nature of the debate.

The case continues to fuel discussion, partly due to constitutional concerns regarding the procedure itself a mechanism originally established to exclude extremist organizations from receiving public funding. Furthermore, many observers felt that the incident raised issues concerning freedom of expression. Hanser publisher Jo Lendle wrote in the *Süddeutsche Zeitung*: "A whiff of McCarthyism is blowing across the land."

Leipzig Book Fair - All gather in Leipzig to celebrate the rich diversity of literature

leipzig 2026 05Consequently, the topic of "intelligence-relevant findings" was frequently the main subject of conversation not only at the exhibition stands but also in the discussion panels held on stages and in cafés despite the intriguing new releases presented by the publishers and their authors, most of whom were present throughout the entire fair.
