Oldenburg - Anyone visiting the city of Oldenburg, with its 160,000 inhabitants in northern Lower Saxony, will surely be pleasantly surprised by its idyllic city centre.
Not only by the pedestrian zone itself, but also by the traditional Christmas market at St. Lamberti Church. Even if the weather is rather dreary and much too warm for the time of year.
As dusk falls, however, the Lamberti Market reveals itself as a luminous "little city" within the city, with over 120 individually designed wooden huts, stalls, and plenty of fir greenery.
Oldenburg presents its pre-Christmas Lamberti Market from November 24th to December 22nd, 2015.
Despite the dampness! Nestled between the castle, the neoclassical old guardhouse, the historic town hall, and the market's namesake, the imposing St. Lamberti Church, a unique atmosphere prevails that is difficult to describe – but one that you can feel when you are there.
Since 1972, the Lamberti Market has grown from a small Christmas tree shop and bazaar into one of the leading Christmas markets in Northern Germany, attracting up to 800,000 visitors annually from near and far.
Over 70 percent of the goods are made on-site. Each stall is individually designed, and the term "showman" takes on a special meaning in Oldenburg.
Here, the showmen present their wares in true showman fashion.
In Oldenburg's "little town," you'll find everything that makes a real Christmas market: a pre-Christmas atmosphere for body and soul!
For those looking for truly special gifts or wanting to treat themselves, the Christmas market stalls offer a wide variety of beautiful items.
From Christmas decorations to pottery and basketry, to jewellery and toys, everyone will find the perfect souvenir.
To warm up, mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle (a traditional German mulled wine punch), and other non-alcoholic hot drinks are, of course, available.
Numerous huts and stalls invite you to indulge in delicious food and drink. In addition to gingerbread, pastries, and sweets, there will be many other specialties.
Christmas time in Oldenburg always means relaxed strolling and shopping.
Oldenburg's record lies in the fact that almost the entire city centre is a pedestrian zone.
What's special is that in many shops, especially the smaller ones, the owner still personally advises and serves customers.
Here, someone isn't just behind the counter, but also stands behind their products.
For the third time, the City of Oldenburg and the Oldenburg Showmen's Association are providing a booth for charitable organizations.
Charitable organizations have the opportunity to present themselves and raise money for good causes through sales.
