Turkish state television reduces TV broadcast of 2014 World Cup

This year, the holy month of fasting Ramadan will take place from June 28th to July 27th, at least in part the World Cup in Brazil will run parallel. Although the 2014 World Cup will take place without the participation of the Turkish national team, there are still countless football fans in Turkey who would like to follow the World Cup.

The World Cup in Brazil begins on June 12 and ends with the final on July 13, 2014. According to a press release, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arinc of Turkey has now announced that he believes there will be clear transmission limits with regard to live match reports. The Turkish state television station TRT announced that all live games that coincide with the fast-breaking during Ramadan will not be broadcast.

It is still unclear whether the TRT will transfer the television rights to private broadcasters. Accordingly, the possible transmitter is still unclear. It will be interesting to see how Turkish football fans will react to this government announcement.

The deputy leader of the opposition party CHP Sezgin Tanrikulu had submitted a parliamentary question to the ruling AKP, which was answered by the deputy Arınç as follows: The main channel TRT 1 will not broadcast all quarterfinal matches as some of these matches will coincide with the breaking of the fast. Arınç added, however, that TRT could sell broadcast rights to the 2014 FIFA World Cup to other broadcasters. According to his view, there are already concrete talks with private broadcasters.

Vice-Chairman Sezgin Tanrikulu then asked why TRT had not considered other channels of its own broadcaster such as TRT Haber, TRT 3 or TRT HD to broadcast these games and would instead look for a private commercial channel that is not free for everyone would be receivable. This request has so far remained unanswered.

The priorities are set: Games during the soccer World Cup in Brazil that coincide with the breaking of the fast will not be broadcast by the state TV channel TRT!
