Alexandroupolis – Camping and Cycle Paths

Alexandroupolis – After a restful sleep and a hearty breakfast at Alexandroupolis’s well-maintained municipal campsite, we planned a bicycle tour into the city centre for the afternoon. Unfortunately, there hadn't been time to explore by bike during our winter visit.
Although the bikes were a bit dirty from heavy rain in Turkey, we quickly got them ready to go and prepared our camera and filming equipment. Apart from an initial stretch that requires riding parallel to the road, the city features clearly marked cycle paths sadly, still a rarity in many southern countries.
Tall trees and clusters of shrubs which do require constant, heavy watering create a pleasant camping atmosphere, while the beach and the sea add to the sense of well-being.
We rode into the city centre, recalling the park where a group of girls had greeted us so joyfully at Christmas, and where a display of garden plants and flowers was now on show. We were able to securely park our bikes at fixed racks.
On this Sunday, horticultural businesses and private individuals were offering their products for sale, always ready to engage in detailed conversations about them. It was a true market atmosphere under a brilliant blue sky, accompanied by a pleasantly fresh sea breeze.
We enjoyed the display of shrubs and flowers so much that we ended up staying longer than originally planned.
Suitable clay pots were available for the newly purchased plants, and the entire market scene was framed by art exhibitions featuring local artists.
Culinary delights were not overlooked either; there were stalls offering olive oils in a wide variety of blends and infusions all organically produced available for presentation and tasting. We continued our walk through several bustling streets toward the waterfront promenade, passing a host of busy taverns, restaurants, ice cream parlours, and bars. The atmosphere here was fantastic, too.
During our stroll, we also came across the old lighthouse of Alexandroupolis, which is now considered a city landmark.
It was late afternoon by the time we returned to the campsite after thoroughly exploring the cycling network of Alexandroupolis. A lovely excursion into the city, rich in new discoveries, was drawing to a close.
