Neckar-Alb-Aare - A Journey Through Time Along Roman Road
- Written by Portal Editor
Neckar-Alb-Aare - Following ancient long-distance routes, the Roman Road brings the Roman past to life.
Here, history enthusiasts gain fascinating insights into life around 2,000 years ago, when southwestern Germany and Switzerland were still Roman provinces. How did people live there? How did they earn their living? How did they spend their leisure time? How did they dress, what did they eat? What did their houses look like? Numerous remnants from that era can still be seen today. Through archaeological tours, special events, Roman festivals, craft demonstrations, and hands-on activities, visitors can discover the living conditions of around 2,000 years ago.
Roman Road Neckar-Alb-Aare – Highlights 2026
In 2026, the event program will also feature some special highlights. For the first time, the Aargau Cantonal Archaeology Department will offer an archaeological tour of Bad Zurzach. In addition to many other guided tours of the site and museums, current excavations can also be visited in 2026. On May 2nd, there will be guided tours of the late Roman fort in Stein am Rhein. The restoration work planned for the fort walls there, starting in April, will be accompanied by archaeological monitoring, and the Schaffhausen Cantonal Archaeology department will offer insights into the ongoing work. During the summer holidays, the University of Freiburg will conduct a training excavation for the second time at the fort site in Waldmössingen. On August 15th, Dr. Christoph Wulfmeier, head of the Rottweil branch of the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, will provide insights into the current progress and questions surrounding the ongoing excavation.
Many of the events are particularly well-suited for families and children. For example, there is the Roman Day Vindonissa on June 7th, which will offer a variety of activities in and around the amphitheater in Windisch, Switzerland: chariot races, gladiators, and plenty of spectacle in the arena, as well as legionary marching camps, activity programs, and information on current research on the adjacent grounds. Gladiator fights can also be admired in Rottenburg am Neckar, accompanying the exhibition at the Roman City Museum Sumelocenna, which runs from May to September. There, on Gladiator Day, July 11th, the "Ludus Treverorum" will not only demonstrate ancient combat skills but also impart knowledge of combat tactics and Roman history, ethical principles, and worldview. The guided tour of the temple complex at Brandsteig in Aichhalden-Rötenberg on July 18th is specifically geared towards families this year, and who knows, perhaps Centurion Antonius Silo, who erected a votive stone there, will even make an appearance.
At the Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen-Stein
Culinary delights await at the evening event hosted by the Museum of Archaeology Thurgau in Frauenfeld on April 23rd, which will focus on "garum," the fish sauce immensely popular in Roman times. The Legio VIII Augusta's event day in Pliezhausen on June 28th will also revolve around Roman cuisine this year. A fixed date in autumn is the "Romans by Torchlight" event at the Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen-Stein. On October 10th and 11th, historical merchants and groups from various countries will bring the time of the Romans, Alamanni, and Celts back to life. Nighttime battle reenactments and a fire show are a must on Saturday evening!
