Caneo – Bicycle tour to the idyllic fishing harbour

Caneo – The weather is glorious, so we quickly hop on our bikes, pack some snacks, and set off from the Staranzano camper site toward the coast via Via Grappetta and Via Sacchetti, where the cycle path runs along the top of the protective dike.

Here on the Bay of Monfalcone, reeds and rushes grow to heights of over 4 meters, with stem thicknesses almost as robust as those of young trees.
Who was being mischievous here? Or could it actually be true? Who knows for sure! A souvenir from the Florida swamplands.
Endless reed beds stretch along the *Biotopo Palude del Fiume Cavana* a paradise for birds and birdwatchers alike. A wooden boardwalk allows birdwatching tourists to venture into the reed beds without getting their feet wet.
A November atmosphere pervades the otherwise deserted-looking fishing village frequented by recreational anglers; boats have already been wrapped up for winter.
The scene is quite different in the small harbour opposite, where commercial fishermen are hard at work. Some are heading out into the bay, despite the late hour......, while others have already returned to the small fishing harbour with a good catch.
Skilful hands and plenty of patience are required to "free" the fish from the fine-meshed nets. From the fishing village, we drove across the nearest Isonzo bridge towards Grado and as if it were "Fish Day" found ourselves right in the fishermen's quarter.
Narrow alleys interspersed with open spaces define the townscape of Grado, a tourist town that is bustling in the summer and boasts a large marina.
After a short break and an initial walk around Grado which we will cover in a future blog post we drove towards Aquileia along the long causeway that cuts across the lagoon.
From Caneo onwards, the cycle path runs parallel to the main road but remains separated from it. Starting from the Grado lagoon on the Mediterranean, cyclists can reach and cross the Alps, subsequently accessing the extensive cycle path networks of Austria and Germany.
