UNIVERSITY RANKING Berlin, March 10, 2010 – “Goodbye Germany”: German students are apparently increasingly drawn to studying abroad for a few semesters.
After all, studying abroad offers many advantages: You get to know another country, improve your foreign language skills, gain intercultural competence, and broaden your horizons.
UNIVERSITY RANKING - Most top universities are found in Istanbul
With 98 public and 45 private universities, Turkey is well-positioned. However, anyone who wants to play it safe and avoid potential pitfalls should get an overview of the Turkish higher education landscape beforehand. A recent survey on www.studentSN.com, in which 7,442 members participated (see infographic), provides assistance in this regard. The survey focused on the prestige of universities based on study conditions and academic standards. Surprisingly, Istanbul's educational institutions only landed in second and third place, behind Cumhurriyet University in the province of Sivas, which has a population of just 288,000. Despite this, Istanbul remains the undisputed educational capital with more than 25 universities and the largest student body. According to the survey, the universities in this metropolis of 13 million inhabitants are among the most popular in the country and can certainly compete with European standards. This is significant considering that more than 18,000 international students complete their semester abroad in Turkey each year – and the trend is rising.
Ibrahim Tarlig is the co-founder and CEO of the student service network studentSN.com. Most of its approximately 800,000 members across Europe come from Turkey; Germany is the second largest group. In Germany, studentSN has been offering services since 2008, including classic networking, Web2Mobile SMS, a document exchange, and mobile and online gaming. Tarlig himself studied business administration at Humboldt University in Berlin and, thanks to his immigrant background, is very familiar with the predominantly positive reputation of Turkish universities. He sees his steadily growing social network as an ideal platform for high school and university students interested in studying in Turkey. According to Tarlig, they plan to collaborate more closely with German and Turkish universities in the foreseeable future to provide interested individuals with the best possible information about studying abroad in Turkey.
