Thessalonica Airport - Makedonia Airport (SKG)

Thessalonica Airport - Makedonia Airport (SKG)

Couple of times we already had the request of friends or relatives who wanted to visit us for a few days us by plane and lightweight luggage during our tour.

Depending on the destination we were able to refer to the airport Macedonia in Thessaloniki, which is served by many European airlines.

The Aegean Airlines flies to most destinations in the German-speaking countries like Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.  In addition, German Wings offers year-round flights to Cologne / Bonn and Stuttgart, Austrian Airlines to Vienna. Moreover, there are seasonal numerous flights as Air Berlin, easyJet or Ryanair from or to airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Turkey there are some compounds, but mainly to Istanbul. A cheap way for arrival from Turkey to Thessaloniki are also the intercity bus lines, we will publish separate information later.

The airport terminal Thessalonica was rebuilt in 1997 and expanded a lot. This was followed by an extension of the runway 10/28 to 1000 meters into the sea; the resulting runway 10/28 (new) thus now has a length of 3,440 m and a width of 50 m. In parallel, a taxiway is applied so that an artificial mound in the Bay of Thermaikos of 1064 m × 450 m occurs. The airport has two intersecting runways at the center. It lies about 13 km south-east of Thessalonica near the location Mikra directly on the Thermaic Gulf.

In the next expansion phase, a terminal with two working floors (departure and arrival) were built with passenger boarding bridges and 100 check-in desks. The planned capacity will be in the final phase of 16 million passengers per year as a maximum. In addition to the arrival and departure zone new parking spaces have been provided for about 3600 vehicles and the space  of the runway parking was extended to 22 aircraft in parking positions and additional five heliports.

Due to the economic crisis in Greece and the resulting privatization of public entities, Fraport's got the chance to operate the airport for the next 40 years and, in beating two other international consortia, what they received in November 2014.

The approach to the airport Thessaloniki is particularly worth seeing when landing from the west. The landing takes place via the sea (Thermaic Gulf), Thessalonica can be seen on the left. In the case of a landing approach from the east in considerable depth about Mikra and other suburbs of Thessalonica which sometimes looks like difficult, since there is no more than 5 up to 6 km distance between the first ridges of Chalkidiki and the runway.

About the short feeder road (National Road 67) the airport is connected to the highway 25 (Nea Moudania, Chalkidiki - inner ring Thessaloniki - Serres). In the triangle Evkarpias you will reach little later, you can follow the GR - A2 (Highway 2).

There is no direct rail connection to the airport. Train Station you can reach by taxi or bus, about 15 km it is to the central train station of Thessalonica. Buses 78 and 78N operate on the line to city center and the train station to the national KTEL buses station. (40 min - 60 min). (Bus schedule: daytime (78), at night (78N))
