Badger in Brandenburg Unearths Treasure!

Badger himself was surely disappointed by his dig: While searching for earthworms and expanding his sett, he came across a sword, a bronze vessel, an ornate belt buckle, and a human hip bone.

"Not exactly a treasure worth considering for badgers," says Dr. Andreas Kinser of the German Wildlife Foundation. But the badger's find in Brandenburg was a sensation, because the animal archaeologist unearthed a historic burial site from the 12th century earlier this week! The scientific world is in an uproar. Badgers maintain a long tradition of building their own setts: "There are badger setts that are centuries old," says Dr. Kinser. "Entire generations dig and build on them, creating extensive tunnels and galleries that reach up to 2.5 meters underground."

The German Wildlife Foundation: Screams in the Forest Could Be Badger Mating Calls

dachse im wald 021With its stocky body, the badger may look like a small bear, but it belongs to the weasel family. Even those unfamiliar with badgers can immediately recognize it by its wedge-shaped head with the white "racing stripes" on its sides. "Anyone who hears a bloodcurdling scream during a nighttime walk in the woods shouldn't panic," says the expert from the German Wildlife Foundation. "The plump loner is currently looking for a mate, as it's the badger mating season in midsummer. The screams are intended to impress the females." Humans and badgers rarely encounter each other: During the day, the digging expert is a grumpy loner and primarily active at dusk and at night. When encountering hikers, it usually retreats with a huff. This animal amateur archaeologist is also a fantastic builder who places great value on hygiene: His burrow consists of air shafts, main and secondary tunnels, and a multitude of small pits – his toilets.
