Oba – Alanya's Suburb is Transforming
- Written by Portal Editor
Oba (or Obaköy) was once "just" a district, or rather a suburb, of Alanya in the Turkish province of Antalya, characterized by local fruit growers.
Before the first administrative reform in 2013, Oba was an independent town, known as Belde in Turkish. Today, Oba is almost completely merged with Alanya. The former district of Alanya is located about 140 kilometres from Antalya.
Oba was once the capital of the Alaiye Beylik (Alanya County).
In 1934, a part of Oba was separated and formed the village of Çıplaklı. In 1999, Oba was granted the status of a city district. The most important crops in this region have always been citrus fruits and dwarf apples. Today, almost the entire area is densely built up with multi-story buildings, which is why our focus is more on the past; the selected images should be understood accordingly.
Once a beautiful landscape surrounded by hills and the adjacent Taurus Mountains, the town captivated visitors, as did its beaches, where vacationers enjoyed a pleasant break year after year. The mayor of this town, Mr. Sefik Türkaç, is a model of commitment to preserving nature. Together with the town council, he has prohibited uncontrolled development for many years. The diversity of the landscape is to be preserved so that Oba can continue to present itself as an oasis on the Mediterranean.
Metro Market in the District
That this beautiful spot was considered special is evidenced, among other things, by the fact that over 1,000 German families had chosen to live here. The realization of a Metro market can be considered an extraordinary success of sound policy. On a site of 24,000 square meters with a sales area of 6,000 square meters, the project was realized in close cooperation with the local authorities in Oba. 150 employees from Turkey found secure jobs here. For the entire region, Oba has become an attractive location for business and the future thanks to this Metro market. The numerous synergies created by this initiative have helped this beautiful town to further flourish.
Mayor Sefik Türkaç can proudly say that his region in and around Oba has developed into an exceptional place to live. The Oba River offers ideal recreational opportunities. Picnic areas have been created in many places, where one can find the relaxation, one seeks in peace and quiet. The town's rich history leads visitors to discover many traces of the past during their explorations. Those who enjoy running or jogging can do so here in a very individual way. Many paths and trails have been specially created for this purpose within the beautifully landscaped orange groves. The entire Oba district is characterized by its diverse agriculture; banana, orange, and strawberry plantations, as well as numerous other fruits and vegetables, are cultivated here organically for the end consumer.
Today, densely built up with large hospitals, the university, and numerous other public buildings, the greenery in Oba has disappeared. The fruit and vegetable gardens have given way to development. What a shame.
