Paragliding – International by Pal Takats

Paragliding – A sport that is gaining an increasing number of enthusiasts including in Turkey is paragliding. Paragliders are frequently spotted in the vicinity of Fethiye, soaring around Mount Babadağ before gliding down in a gentle descent toward the beach at Ölüdeniz.
However, the number of paragliders is also on the rise in Alanya. Here, in addition to training courses and instruction, tandem flights are offered; this allows interested tourists—who simply wish to try it out once to get a taste of the paragliding experience.
Paragliding – Controlled Crashes – Improving Flight Technique
Paragliding has been around since approximately 1965, when David Barish coined the term "slope soaring" to describe this new sport. Slope soaring typically takes place from steep terrain features that allow for a short running start during takeoff.
Due to the square parachutes used at the time, gliding performance was limited; consequently, high launch points were required.
For this reason, during the 1970s, early paragliding flights using these square parachutes were frequently compared to and even described as "controlled crashes." It was not until the continued development of paragliders in the 1980s that the aerodynamic characteristics and manufacturing quality of the wings improved sufficiently to ensure adequate safety standards.
Technical Equipment for Paragliding
A paraglider's equipment naturally begins first and foremost with the paraglider itself. This represents a significant financial investment; consequently, rental equipment is available at many locations. The paraglider itself also referred to as the "canopy" typically consists of nylon panels constructed using a ripstop weave to optimize air permeability.
Thanks to the specialized shaping of the canopy featuring integrated profiles and internal cell divisions the air flowing in from the front is channeled in such a way that the wing remains highly controllable and maintains its aerodynamic profile. Suspension lines descend in multiple tiers to the risers, where the pilot and co-pilot can settle in comfortably. Depending on the quality and specifications of the paraglider, safety features may include protective padding to cushion rough landings, or specialized carrying bags designed for cross-country pilots; frequently, instruments such as GPS devices or variometers are also included.
A reserve parachute is also provided, and sometimes a radio as well.
The Pre-Takeoff Safety Check
Anyone interested in trying out paragliding can typically receive an on-site technical briefing in many locations, followed by an introductory flight lesson. Launches take place from mountains situated along the coast, but only after specific safety checks have been completed. In addition to assessing the physical environment (such as uneven terrain or potential obstacles), the meteorological conditions and the technical integrity of the paraglider itself are thoroughly inspected. Immediately prior to takeoff, every experienced pilot runs through the following 5-point safety checklist one final time:
- ensuring that all straps and buckles are fastened;
- verifying that all lines are clear and free of knots;
- confirming that the paraglider is fully laid out and the leading edge is open;
- checking that wind conditions permit a safe takeoff and flight; and
- verifying that the airspace is clear for takeoff.
Once all items on the safety checklist have been fulfilled, the launch may proceed.
Professional Gliders and Flight Maneuvers
Occasionally, one can observe magnificent flight maneuvers from the ground, performed by professionals. Naturally, a wide variety of maneuvers can be executed skills that are acquired through formal instruction and extensive training. These maneuvers contribute immensely to safety, enabling the pilot to maintain full control in any situation, even during turbulent conditions within a thermal. As in many sports, extensive training and practice are essential ingredients for success here as well.
We wish you a wonderful time paragliding whether you are flying solo as a pilot or in tandem.
