Buchin – A Roman Bridge? A Visit with Consequences.

Buchin – In our article about the ancient ruined city of Heraclea Lyncestis, we had already briefly mentioned meeting Piotr from Poland and Peco from Buchin, Macedonia; now, we had travelled with the two of them to Peco’s home village.
We reached Buchin by traveling through very rural regions, following the course of a valley. After briefly meeting Peco’s parents, we set out to find the ancient bridge structure in Buchin.
We were greeted by a beautiful floodplain landscape along the riverbank, complete with a shepherd dog in the water.
Understandably, however, our eyes were first drawn to the stone bridge; its construction and execution strongly resembled Roman structures—comparable, for instance, to the massive Cendere Bridge in Central Anatolia or the Xanthos Bridge near Kemer.
Naturally, the bridge had undergone numerous changes and structural modifications over the centuries, making a definitive classification difficult. Nevertheless, the arch spans and the sequence of segmental arches hinted at the structure's true age.
Once we were on the bridge, the track width visible in the road surface also clearly pointed to the structure's age. We plan to consult an expert on this matter—someone we will soon meet at the excavations in ancient Stobi.
The view of the floodplain landscape along the river was also fascinatingly beautiful and made a strong impression on us.
Naturally, our conversations led to further ideas and possibilities perhaps even publishing Piotr’s travel experiences on the cultural portal. Piotr is cycling from Igoumenitsa to Budapest.
We shall see what the future holds and whether we can maintain contact. Naturally, we would love to keep hearing about his experiences. A quick glance at the horse grazing in the floodplain meadows.
This is exactly how one imagines a river landscape, isn't it? Sandy banks alternating with the lush green of grassy areas and trees. Nature at its finest.
Add to that a stone bridge from a bygone era—what more could a romantic heart desire?

A short while later, we were back at Peco’s parents' house, where Turkish coffee and a puppy were already waiting for us. They are incredibly hospitable parents who take wonderful care of their guests. Piotr had told us as much; he likes to stay in private accommodation found and booked online during his cycling tours.
Our conversation eventually turned to the town of Ohrid, which Piotr was keen to visit. We quickly decided that Piotr would join us on the trip to the Rino Campsite in Struga, so he could visit Ohrid the following day.
