It is 18 kilometres away from the city of Bodrum and the road passes through a green forest. The port of Yalikavak lies on the northwestern part of the peninsula and in earlier times was a fishing and sponge-divers' village. Once over the hills, the magnificient view opens where nature has carved the coast like lacework.

It is renown for the numerous old windmills found in the vicinity, the excellent and dreamlike sunsets, its unspoilt shoreline and sparkling, limpid sea.

The Yalıkavak Marina, located in a natural and pretty bay and officially part of the Port of Bodrum, was heavily criticised environmentally in the early days of the project. The well-equipped and well-protected marina is cooled by the "Meltem" breeze in the afternoons.

Travelogue

This small town is situated on the Bodrum peninsula. We were lucky enough to visit on market day, Thursday. The market consisted of the usual wide variety of tasty fruit, vegetables, honey and jam. The tableware and bed linen seemed of a high standard at very reasonable prices.

We wandered around the small shopping area which seemed to sell everything you could possible need.

The town also had a small attractive harbour with mainly fishing boats at anchor.

As it was Bayram the town was busy and so was the local Turkish fast food restaurant, not to be confused with our idea of "fast food" restaurants as the food was fresh and tasty! We had the famous köfte with bean salad and a glass of ayran, delicious.

The town is obviously a popular day-trip destination as on our way out two coaches arrived, unloading Turkish sightseers and causing a huge traffic jam back up the hill, and this was only January!
